Frequently Asked Questions

How about Government Regulations?

In light of proposed new regulations governing the burning of firewood, we are registered with HETAS and the Woodsure Schemes. As you will know we only buy in timber from sustainably managed, UK  woodlands.  Our team at the Woodyard, do their utmost to deliver a uniform product, with a low moisture content.

What does a bag weigh?

The weight of wood changes as it looses moisture. We sell strictly by volume and prefer not to quote weights. It is important not to buy firewood by weight, as wet, unusable firewood clearly weighs more than if it were seasoned and dry (lesson number in firewood buying) However, even dry and seasoned firewood, as ours is, in any of the sack sizes we deliver would be difficult, if not impossible, to move by hand.

Do you accept card payments?

We accept payment by BACS bank transfer, cheques or cash.

Can I specify delivery time?

We aim to provide you with a day and either an AM or PM slot, however, to ensure optimum efficiency in the delivery process any further accuracy is difficult to achieve. In addition we will have recorded any specific delivery instructions so you don't have to worry about where the firewood is placed.

Can we visit the timber yard?

Of course you'd be welcome to call at our North Essex timber yard to view or collect your firewood.  However, in the interests of health and safety, all we ask is that you telephone beforehand to ensure that someone is free to meet you.

How is the firewood delivered?

From the photos you'll have seen a picture of our small delivery lorry. The sacks are craned off and can generally be placed anywhere with hard topped access (driveway man hole covers are generally not designed to withstand the weight of a lorry). Please note that on average we allow a 10 minute slot for off loading.  Regular deliveries are made to towns and cities across the delivery area, including: Saffron Walden, Cambridge, Dunmow, Braintree, Haverhill, Bishop's Stortford, Ely, Chelmsford, Bury St. Edmunds, Great Chesterford, Newport, and Newmarket.

Disclaimer:  Please note that when invited onto your private property to make a delivery, this will be at your own risk. Our drivers try to be as careful as possible, but some accesses are very awkward and accidents can occur using a large vehicle.

Why use delivery sacks?

We feel this is the best way to deliver the firewood to you, the customer. It means that you know exactly what quantity you're buying, the firewood remains clean, it helps you to make the most efficient use of your storage space and can be unpacked at your leisure. We ask customers to retain the empty sacks for collection at the next delivery; the sacks are then reused before being recycled at the end of their use-able life.

What do you do to reduce your environmental impact?

Delivery sacks are reused and then recycled at the end of their life. Our deliveries are grouped geographically to avoid unnecessary journeys. We buy approximately 90% of our timber from within a 50 mile radius.
